MILLIONS of dollars have been invested in developing telecommunications in Vietnam following its open door-policy in 1988.
Deputy director-general of Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT), Nguyen Huu Ban, said the sector had expanded co-operation with foreign firms to in modernise the telecommunications network.
Investment last year was US$230 million with turnover of $160 million, up 95.9 per cent on 1992.
By the year 2000, the government is expected to have invested $2.7 billion to install telephone lines, increasing the number from 260,000 last year to 2.4 million in 2000, and density from 0.37 telephone per 100 people to three per 100.
Mr Nguyen said the country was also developing services such as fax, packet switching, mobile telephones, paging, video-phones and video conferencing, to attract foreign investment.
He said foreign companies, such as Hong Kong Telecommunications, ABC Communications and those from Australia and Singapore, would provide technological advice and assistance in developing telecommunications, while the government would take over management control.
