DHL Express in Hong Kong said yesterday: 'We are looking at re-engineering or migrating processes. It is regrettable, but a small number of positions will be eliminated.' The employees affected had been offered several options, including relocating within the DHL network, or taking on new roles, the statement said.

It also said the company would be moving back-line customer services to Guangzhou. 'We will continue to retain core customer service functions in Hong Kong,' it said. A total of 49 employees would be affected, some of whom had been offered the chance of relocating to Guangzhou.

'For all individuals, we will provide fair severance packages and also render assistance in helping them obtain alternative employment.'

The firm did not say if staff had been laid off.

But Wong Yu-loy, organising secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions, said a source had told the union that about 80 workers at the courier company had been laid off.
