UnionPay bank cards to get online go-ahead

Mainland residents will be able to use their UnionPay bank cards to make online purchases of some goods and services in Hong Kong by the end of the year under a pilot scheme.

It is hoped the scheme will be extended to ticket bookings for local events online through the Urbtix and Hong Kong Ticketing websites, outgoing tourism commissioner Au King-chi said. No timetable for implementation was specified.

'Riding on this new payment facility in the mainland, we will liaise with the relevant parties with a view to enhancing the existing online ticketing facility so as to facilitate free, independent travellers from the mainland booking tickets for arts and cultural activities in Hong Kong,' Ms Au said.

Online purchases were very popular on the mainland and allowing advance bookings to various performances and popular concerts in Hong Kong with China UnionPay bank cards could help boost the city's tourism, she said.

A source familiar with the situation said government discussions about online ticketing with China UnionPay were still at an exploratory stage, as the mainland bank payment system was relatively complex and different from Hong Kong's.

A spokesman for Hong Kong Ticketing said there was no word yet that online payments by China UnionPay would be accepted.
