Tales of the Abyss (Teiruzu obu ji Abisu) is based on the video game of the same name, originally a console role-playing game developed by Namco Tales Studio and published by Namco Bandai for Playstation 2. The game is the eighth title in the Tales series, and was released in December 2005 in Japan, celebrating the franchise's 10th anniversary. An American version was released a year later.

Tales of the Abyss takes place on the planet Auldrant. The prophecy of the planet's future is known as the Score, and recorded on 'Fonstones' which are scattered around the planet.

The two major nations, Kimlasca-Lanvaldear and Malkuth, have battled over the stones for generations, each hoping to discover the planet's fate before the other. Amidst the chaos, a religious group called the Order of Lorelei emerges, led by those dedicated to reading the stones and keeping the peace.

Luke is the son of Duke Fabre of the Kimlasca Kingdom and is destined to bring prosperity to Kimlasca. But he was kidnapped as a child by the Malkuth Empire, and when he was released, his family found the trauma had wiped out his memory. When a mysterious woman invades the palace, a chain of events is started that finds Luke embroiled in a conspiracy that could destroy the world.
