Thirty-three up-and-coming film directors have been selected as the new faces of the Hong Kong movie industry, as part of a government initiative to revive regional markets.

The project, Hong Kong Film: New Action, will include studies on Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan, which used to be key markets for Hong Kong films, and the promotion of a new generation of city directors among regional and mainland buyers, distributors and investors.

Jack So Chak-kwong, chairman of the Film Development Council, said he believed there was scope for the development of Hong Kong films despite the global financial meltdown.

The promotional campaign will include directors not included in the list of 33, who were picked on the recommendation of renowned industry veterans.

The council's secretary general, Wellington Fung Wing, said each of the directors had made at least one film and they showed creativity in their work.

'We hope at least to make them known to industry professionals overseas,' said Mr Fung.
