About 300 talented students from around the world are expected to take summer programmes jointly offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and an American institution next year.

The university will join forces with the Centre for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, to provide three-week courses for gifted secondary school students at the HKUST campus.

'The partnership between two of the world's top institutions in the field of gifted education will play a significant role in nurturing the potential leaders of the world,' said Roland Chin Tai-hong, HKUST's vice-president for academic affairs.

Students in grades seven to nine can choose from 12 courses, including mathematical logic and probability and game theory.

Students from grades 10 to 12 will examine the roles of science and technology in society's development and take elective courses such as critical thinking.
