Times are tough, with many companies cutting back staff. But some local executives and government officials are showing sense by economising on their travels. The big three auto industry chief executives in the US might have flown in their company jets to Congress to beg for a bailout that will cost billions of dollars in taxpayer money, but not so tycoon Peter Lam Gin-ngok (below), the boss of Media Asia, and former PCCW chief Jack So Chak-kwong, who is now chairman of the Film Development Council. The two men - both seasoned jetsetters - have vowed to join cattle class on overseas business trips on behalf of the council. A total of HK$4 million has been earmarked to promote new local film talent. This involves flying young directors and other film industry insiders to the mainland and various Asian countries to introduce them to overseas buyers, distributors and fellow filmmakers - in economy class. Mr So and Mr Lam, a fellow council member, will accompany them. Imagine the sacrifice they have to make by sharing space in a plane with us little people.
