Eleventh five-a-side tournament to help appeal achieve its goal CB Richard Ellis' football team are hoping their win in Thursday's five-a-side quiz night will be a portent of good things to come when they compete in the five-a-side football tournament at Stanley Fort on Sunday. The 11th five-a-side football tournament is the marquee event for Operation Santa Claus because it is always the biggest community fund-raising event for the charity appeal. Twenty teams will compete for the cup. CB Richard Ellis team spokesman Sam Harvey-Jones said his team had come second or third at the quiz night in recent years, so last week's win should be good for morale. 'We're looking forward to Sunday, that's the big one for us,' Mr Harvey-Jones said. 'We've got a competitive team. We did well last year; we are looking forward to doing better this year.' Mr Harvey-Jones said the team played football together every Friday morning. 'It is very good for the team spirit and very good for the working environment as well,' he said. Team Goodfellas came fourth at the quiz night, but won the auction to have their group photograph published in this paper. Seven teams contested the trivia night at Cafe Deco Bar & Grill at the Peak, raising HK$60,000 for Operation Santa Claus. Tournament organiser Brian Crockford said the global financial crisis was having an impact, but he was 'hoping for a commitment of HK$500,000 ... maybe HK$750,000'. 'This year's a bit harder to get the 20 teams signed up for the main tournament, for obvious reasons, but Operation Santa Claus is very close to everybody's heart,' Mr Crockford said. He said the response from the quiz night 'demonstrated everyone's feelings towards the appeal and the core charities that are being supported every year'. He is hoping for warmer weather on Sunday and said three teams had a chance of winning a third cup - Crown Worldwide, Jardine Ruby Murrays or Hong Kong Football Club. Hong Kong Football Club are the defending champions, with Clifford Chance winning the plate last year. The other teams in the competition are CB Richard Ellis, Goodfellas, Crown Worldwide, Zentro, Colliers, Linklaters, Merrill Lynch, Allen & Overy, Jardine Ruby Murrays, Hong Kong Strollers, Royal Bank of Scotland 1 and 2, UBS, JPMorgan Chase, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, M Moser Associates, Prudential, and White & Case. Organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK, Operation Santa Claus, now in its 21st year, will aid 13 groups. Part of the funds will also go to the SCMP Homes for Hope project to help victims of the Sichuan earthquake rebuild their homes.
