Who's behind it? Husband-and-wife team Jane and Raymond Wurwand opened the International Dermal Institute in 1983, a training facility for skincare therapists. 'We realised we needed to develop our own brand - something that was free of common irritants such as mineral oil, S.D. [specially denatured] alcohol, artificial colours, artificial fragrances, lanolin and formaldehyde,' says Raymond. 'Nothing like this existed on the market at the time and the industrial chemists told us it just couldn't be done.' Ultimately, persistence paid off and three years later they launched a small selection of cleansers, toners and moisturisers that has since grown into an extensive collection of more than 70 products. Anything else? The brand sells only through specialist beauty salons. 'We focus on results-orientated treatments, education, health and well-being - not pampering exercises,' says Raymond. 'The market is changing, the majority of our customers are busy working women who don't have the time to sit ... in a facial room so our therapists need to adapt to this.' Any future plans? The company is moving towards making its products paraben-free. Where can I buy it? Selected beauty salons including the Dermalogica Consultation Pod at LCX Causeway Bay and TST. Or call 6655 6488.
