ORIENT Overseas International Ltd (OOIL) has ordered six 4,950-TEU (20-ft equivalent unit) containerships costing about US$484 million from Japanese and South Korean yards.

Scheduled for delivery in the second half of next year and the first quarter of 1996, the post-Panamax vessels will be among the largest containerships in the world.

They will be operated by subsidiary Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).

The order, announced yesterday, forms part of the company's plans to further modernise its fleet and improve service quality.

Four vessels will be built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan and two by Samsung Heavy Industries and Samsung Corp of Korea.

The ships, 906 ft long and 117 ft wide, with a draught of more than 40 ft, will have a service speed of 24.6 knots, making them among the fastest container vessels in the world.
