Estate resident who threw acid from sixth-floor flat sent to jail
A 56-year-old jobless man who threw corrosive acid from his flat onto the common area below because he was annoyed by the noise his neighbours were making was jailed for 25 weeks yesterday. A two-year-old boy and his mother suffered burns. Kam Chun-kow had admitted two counts of dropping objects from a building and one count of throwing corrosives with intent to harm. The woman and son had been taking a break in the park on Shek Lei Estate, Tsuen Wan, early on the morning of September 17. Kam had also dropped two fluorescent lamps and a paint can in two other attacks in the same month before he was arrested in a police ambush, when he was caught throwing a cup of water from his sixth-floor flat. The District Court had been told that Kam was not suffering from any mental problems, and he said his acts were triggered by the annoyance and stress resulting from people talking loudly late at night. Judge Stanley Chan Kwong-chi said the defendant's attacks were horrifying.
