Selina Tsang hopes fund-raisers' efforts will bring warmth and joy to those in need Operation Santa Claus' virtual 'Christmas Tree' has been up for two weeks now, and the donations are pouring in from donors and individuals who give because they believe the less fortunate need help in these dire economic times. And their efforts have prompted a 'Christmas message' from the honorary patron of Operation Santa Claus 2008, the chief executive's wife, Selina Tsang Pou Siu-mei. 'I wish Operation Santa Claus to be successful in its endeavours, bringing joy to the community in this season of the year,' said Mrs Tsang, Operation Santa's patron for the third year. 'I also hope that the funds raised will create a warm and loving environment for the needy in Hong Kong, as well as the devastated communities affected by the Sichuan earthquake in China this year.' Organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK, Operation Santa Claus, now in its 21st year, will aid 13 groups. Part of the funds will also go to the Post Homes for Hope project to help victims of the May 12 earthquake rebuild their homes. Apart from Operation Santa, Mrs Tsang is patron of 65 other charitable organisations. She is president of the Hong Kong Red Cross, the Community Chest and the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association. She said when she received an invitation to be patron of a charitable organisation she 'considers whether the organisation concerned is engaging in activities of value to the community and whether it has commendable missions and visions'. Her reason for choosing OSC? She supports it, because 'it has a history of serving the community in a creative manner, especially in respect of fund-raising'. 'For instance, members of the public are invited to be a 'Santa Claus' and to participate in a series of fund-raising events. The organisation also has a shared commitment to a very meaningful cause, and contributes much festive fun and laughter to the city,' she said. As patron, Mrs Tsang's main role is to show 'genuine support to help advance the missions of the organisations concerned, and to encourage members of the public to participate in their activities and sponsor for noble causes'. All funds raised by Operation Santa will benefit the following charitable groups: End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation, Operation Dawn, Youth Outreach School of Hip Hop, Caritas-Hong Kong UNHCR Project, Hong Kong Unison, Produce Green Foundation, Soul Talk, HK Young Women's Christian Association Wan Wah Care and Attention Home, Children's Heart Foundation, Lions Kidney Educational Centre and Research Foundation, The Society for Aids Care, Grace Link Charity and The Samaritans. This year's Operation Santa Claus ambassador is singer-songwriter Ivana Wong Yuen-chi.
