Myanmar
Typhoon Nargis struck Myanmar on May 2. It was the biggest natural disaster since the Asian tsunami in 2004. At least 146,000 people died during the storm but some countries believe the Myanmese government under-reported the death toll. They believe more than a million people could have died from the cyclone.
Nargis wasn't the only storm to hit the region though. At first, the Myanmese government refused to let aid into the country, sparking an outcry around the world. Also making relief efforts difficult was the fact that only 10 days later, China was hit by the massive earthquake in Sichuan .

The world held its collective breath as a spy satellite was on a collision course with Earth. The satellite was shot down in the nick of time by a missile from the United States Navy's USS Eerie.
