Up to 381 people living in Guangzhou's Baiyun district have been evacuated from their homes since Friday after construction work caused the ground to give way, causing 73 houses to subside, and threatening others. Three building projects blamed for triggering cracks in houses were ordered to suspend work to avoid causing further damage, said Liu Weiqian, Baiyun district's deputy head. Officials sealed off an area of about 5,000 square metres on Friday. Most of those evacuated were migrant workers; only 47 were local. Residents were allowed in to pack their belongings over the weekend, but only in the company of their landlords, causing long lines that took hours to clear. Police said the arrangement was to prevent theft, and ensure that only genuine residents could enter the sealed-off area. Mr Liu said the authorities turned government offices into temporary shelters to accommodate those affected. Food and water were provided for the estimated 130 people at the shelters. Others stayed with relatives.
