Three hundred Kwun Tong residents took part in a march yesterday, calling for the Urban Renewal Authority to double its offer price for buying up properties to redevelop the town centre.

Helen Wong Yat-man, vice-chairwoman of the Alliance of Kwun Tong's Urban Renewal, said they were demanding that the authority offer enough compensation for residents to be able to buy newer properties of a similar size and location, and release names of the 11 surveyors who advised it on the offer price.

The URA recently announced it would pay HK$5,937 per square foot of usable area.

'This offer is, we believe, absolutely unacceptable,' Ms Wong said.

Ling Fung-har, 50, who has lived in Kwun Tong since she was seven, said she was not ready to give up the flat in which she had lived in for 38 years and raised two daughters for the URA's price.

'This is the beating heart of East Kowloon ... the price they are giving is not enough,' she said.
