A Hong Kong couple have been injured in a car accident while travelling in Japan. The couple, who have not been named, had hired a car in Sendai and were driving in Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture on Tuesday on their way to a spa, media reports said. The accident happened at about 3pm when the car, being driven by the wife, collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction. The 26-year-old woman, her husband, 28, and the female truck driver were all injured. Japanese police said initial investigations showed the road, covered by a thin layer of frost, was slippery when the accident happened. It appeared that the woman had lost control of the car due to the driving conditions. A Hong Kong government spokesman said yesterday the Immigration Department had contacted the couple with the help of the Chinese embassy in Japan. The couple had been discharged from hospital after receiving medical treatment, and the Immigration Department would remain in close contact with the Foreign Ministry commissioner's office in Hong Kong and the Chinese embassy in Japan to offer help to the couple, the statement read. The spokesman said that help would be given for the couple to return to Hong Kong as soon as possible, if they asked for such assistance.
