Hong Kong Airport Services has agreed to meet unionists and workers' representatives today ahead of a possible strike by workers over a recent company decision to halve their annual bonus.
The union yesterday stood firm against any decision to cut workers' benefits, saying the company had been making profits - at least for the first six months of the year. Chan Po-choi, general secretary of the Staff and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines, who supports the workers, said it would decide the next move after today's meeting but declined to rule out a strike.
'We shall discuss with workers what to do next. We do not want to do anything that will affect services to the airport. But it all depends upon whether the company can show sincerity in resolving the issue, ' Mr Chan said.
Patricia Chan, Airport Services' personnel and administration manager, said in an interview with Commercial Radio she hoped the workers would be rational. She said the management would explain the reasons for the bonus cut at the meeting.
The Labour Department and Airport Authority have also called for calm.
