The YP team on the best - and worst - of all things musical in 2008
Sunny Tse
Best album: Juno OST, an album full of folkie tunes and silly lyrics. It captures the essence of the film with light-hearted, catchy, slightly quirky tracks from Kimya Dawson and The Mouldy Peaches. Classics from The Kinks and Belle and Sebastian are the perfect icing on a wonderful cake. I have it on repeat.
Worst album: Scarlett Johansson's Anywhere I Lay My Head. Her limited vocal range ruins Tom Waits' songs. Her raspy voice is frequently on the verge of off-key and lacks emotion. I'd trade all my 2009 wishes to make her stick to movies - even my hopes for Liverpool FC.
Best new act: MGMT. The NYC duo surprised the world with amazing techno, synth pop and space-rock numbers. Debut Oracular Spectacular has an original vibe, well-thought-out arrangements, and fun, sarcastic lyrics. Time to Pretend, Kids and Electric Feel can't fail to please.
Favourite discovery: Avenue Q: The Musical. I regret not buying it sooner. Hugely entertaining with beautifully written songs, witty lines and solid singing. I need to see it!
