Two-timing gourmets are likely to consider pre-testing their meals after viewing this cuisine-based psychological thriller.
Deadly Delicious centres on the predicament facing philandering epicure Chen Jiaqiao (Francis  Ng)  when his indulgences inside and outside the home lead to potentially fatal consequences.
It's an interesting premise whose possibilities are only partially realised by first-time director Zhao  Tianyu, working under the auspices of executive producer and director Zhang  Yibai (Spring Subway).
Without giving away too much of the plot, Jiaqiao finds himself  in a deadly dilemma when his stewardess girlfriend, Coco (Jiang  Yiyan), decides the best way to her supercilious lover's heart is via his stomach and thereupon seeks advice from a mysterious cooking expert (Yu  Nan).
The mood is suitably claustrophobic and shows yet another side of Chongqing, the overcast southern  city that in recent years has emerged as a major screen presence in pictures such as Crazy  Stone (2006) and Lost, Indulgence  (2008).
The movie works best when dealing with food, presenting mouth-watering dishes a la Eat Drink  Man Woman, albeit with lethal undertones.
Ng - who has always displayed a strong screen persona - is given a paradoxically passive part that is nonetheless the narrative's chief motivating force.
He is overshadowed by his female counterparts, with Yu Nan  in a role that makes much better use of her talents than that provided to her by the Wachowski brothers in last year's Hollywood production Speed  Racer.
