Record crowds and sales at expo

Not only did record numbers of visitors throng the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo this year, but they spent more as well.

A record 2.16 million people attended the 23-day event that ended yesterday - 230,000 more than the figure for the last expo, which ran for 25 days.

The organiser, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, estimated that total sales increased about 20 per cent from last year's, reaching HK$270 million.

Irons Sze Wing-wai, vice-chairman of the association, said the numbers signalled that people were still willing to spend amid an economic slowdown if the products were of good quality and reasonably priced.

About a hundred visitors were already queueing outside the expo venue at Victoria Park as it opened at 11am yesterday.

Some were making a repeat visit in the hopes of bagging bargains, as exhibitors tend to slash prices on the final day to clear stocks.

They were not disappointed.
