Popular blog service provider shut down

Vivian Wu

Bullog.cn, a free, high-profile blog service popular with the mainland's cultural community, was shut down yesterday afternoon by internet authorities.

Bullog.cn was established in 2006 by Luo Yonghao, a pioneering blogger and former New Oriental School lecturer in English known among younger Chinese for his outspoken remarks.

Mr Luo confirmed yesterday that the website was shut for 'picking up harmful information on political and current affairs'.

The service has been closed and reopened twice before, but it was unclear whether it would be revived again. Bloggers said they were 'enraged' and 'speechless'.

Bullog.cn was applauded for its live reporting on the protest against the construction of a chemical plant in June 2007 in Xiamen, Fujian .
