Ocean Park's  two sick Chinese sturgeon yesterday arrived at a Fujian  research centre for treatment, the theme park said.
Ocean Park  said the two rare 'national treasures' left the park at 7pm on Friday.
They arrived at the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute  of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences  in Xiamen  after 14 hours in transit.
The move came a week after the third death among the  10  rare fish given by Beijing to Hong Kong last year to celebrate the Olympic Games.
The first sturgeon died after being bitten by a barracuda while it was in a communal tank.
Experts suggested that the sick fish, and the other two sturgeon which died recently, could have become stressed by a salination  process and contracted infections.
The fish tanks are being converted from fresh water to salt water. Sturgeon are able to live in both.
'Ocean Park's facilities mainly operate in a salt water environment, but in Xiamen there are  facilities to enable the two fish to be kept separately in a freshwater pool, so that the change in the salinity of the water can be made to meet the specific needs of the two fish,' Ocean Park chairman Allan Zeman  said.
He said the decision to send the fish back was made after discussion with mainland experts.
Both the park and the experts agreed that it was the best option.
The park would also  continue discussions with the mainland experts to finalise arrangements for the  remaining five fish, and the way forward in  the conservation research project involving the Chinese sturgeon.
The two sick sturgeon, both nine years old, were accompanied on their journey to Xiamen by five experts, including two from the mainland and three from the park, and were settling into holding facilities, the  park said.
It did not say whether the two fish would be returned to Ocean Park after treatment, or when the park's Chinese sturgeon aquarium would reopen.
Earlier last week, the park said the two fish had little appetite and were moving very slowly.
It announced on Wednesday that they would be moved to Xiamen.
They were from the second batch of Chinese sturgeon sent to the city in July, a month after the first sturgeon from the first batch of five given to Hong Kong was killed by the barracuda.
