Ready for Battles Heard of Battles? I didn't think so, but according to those who have caught the critically acclaimed experimental band in concert, Hong Kong is in for one of its best gigs of the year in March.
The American band (below) are different in that they are led by their drummer John Stanier, formerly of Helmet, who sets a furious but stunningly accurate pace that is matched by his accomplished band mates, including ex-Don Caballero guitarist Ian Williams.
Battles' music is difficult to describe, but takes in technical math rock and flashes of post-rock overlaid with abstract vocal samples triggered by keyboardist/guitarist Tyondai Braxton.
No other band sounds quite like them and, apart from Sunday's show by Mogwai, it's the first gig of this year that we're really excited about (apologies to Rod Stewart and Co). The exact date and venue has yet to be announced, but the concert will take place in March.
DJ gives HK another shot
Renowned Japanese DJ Takkyu Ishino is returning to Hong Kong for a Lunar New Year party, and we're hoping he doesn't come with a sour taste in his mouth from his last appearance.
