Eagle Eye (DVD)

Why you can trust SCMP

Combining a high-speed car chase, bomb blasts galore and technology-gone-wild, Eagle Eye is a great action flick for nights when your brain has switched off.

Directed by Disturbia's David Caruso, the movie follows a university dropout named Jerry (Disturbia lead Shia LaBeouf) and tough single mum Rachel (Michelle Monaghan), who find themselves unwitting pawns in the control of an anonymous digital voice.

The voice dictates their moves via the electronic devices around them. They are forced, for example, to obey it, or risk setting off an explosive placed in Rachel's son's trumpet. The ultimate goal is for them to kill the president.

Jerry and Rachel have no one to turn to, as the highest levels of defence - led by a bored-looking Billy Bob Thorton - are hot on their heels for reasons they can't work out.

Eagle Eye has been criticised for copying ideas from classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and George Orwell's 1984. It does, but technology has never been as ingrained in our lives as it is today, and a modern spin on the 'Big Brother is Watching You' theme comes as no surprise.

The movie may not do for technology what Jaws did for sharks, but it might make you think twice before picking up your mobile.
