The economic slowdown would not drive wealthy bidders away from the coming Lunar New Year auction of licence plates, a trader said yesterday, though he did not expect the sale to outshine last year's. Some 45 special number plates, including three personalised plates, will be auctioned at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on February 7 by the Transport Department. Among them, 1318 - which in Cantonese sounds like 'whole life will be wealthy' - 1813, 2318, 3218 and 1718 would be the highlights, veteran plate trader Ngan Man-hon said. Other popular lots included HK 2828, KK 888, KK 9999, MY 888, and AA 9898, Mr Ngan, director of the Lucky Number Centre, said. The potential top price could be for the personalised plate GG, whose reserve price could be set at more than HK$300,000, he said. 'It would be not surprising for it to fetch HK$500,000 to HK$600,000,' he said. The plate KK fetched HK$600,000 at last year's Lunar New Year auction. Mr Ngan expected this year's sale would not match last year's record top price - HK$16.5 million for the plate 18 - or total, HK$33 million.
