You know macho action star Simon Yam Tat-wah. Now meet Yam the sensitive photographer-painter. 'Actually, drawing pictures is what I was best at when I was a kid,' Yam (right in picture) said. 'I was very good at it but, unfortunately, I didn't have the time to develop the skill. So I started using a camera to capture things that were beautiful and then create, turning the images into paintings.' He might be shooting another Johnnie To Kei-fung thriller in Macau - the one featuring French legend Johnny Hallyday - but come tomorrow he will officially open an art exhibition (although the display starts tonight) with Dr Dominic Lam Man-kit (left) at the Central Library in Causeway Bay. It also features poems by veteran actor Lau Siu-ming. Both Lam and Yam share a strong interest in the visual arts, and Yam was introduced to a technique called chromoskedasic painting that Lam mastered using film negatives to create colour pictures. For this exhibition, the actor created 10 works called the Spiritual Flowers series. 'What was most challenging is that you can never have the full control of how the images are going to look because it all depends on the concentration of the film-developing chemical you are using and how long you leave it exposed. But this is also what makes it so interesting.' The artistic-minded Yam believes all creative endeavours are same. 'They all require you to do it with heart.' The 53-year-old added that he'd learned a new hobby recently. 'I am learning some magic tricks at the moment. It's a great way to communicate with my daughter.' The artists will host a forum tomorrow at 10am at the Central Library's lecture theatre. Admission is free.
