Keloids are painful and permanent reminders of injuries - but they can be treated
There are many different sorts of scars - one of the most upsetting type is called a keloid.
'About four years ago, I aggravated a few acne scars on my chest by picking at them,' says 19-year-old 'Cassie'.
'Unfortunately, these turned into scars which developed into larger, raised, red, itchy and tender scars called keloids.
'I'm undergoing a mixture of laser therapy, steroid injections and antibiotic cream treatment at the moment. Luckily, this is helping to reduce the pain and itching, and my keloids are also reducing in size.'
Scars form when damaged skin mends. They are usually red immediately after the wound has healed, but over time will become paler and flatter.
