Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers Inside Tracks (Telarc Blues) Guitarist, singer and songwriter Jimmy Thackery made his reputation with hard-working blues band the Nighthawks, and plays blues-based American roots music incorporating elements of country and early 1960s guitar instrumental rock. As a player he recalls Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton, but with less emphasis on flash and more on tone and taste. Inside Tracks features him supported by bassist Mark Bumgarner and drummer Mark Stutso playing a set mostly composed of originals, plus a rocking cover of Chuck Berry's Promised Land. Lyrics are not really Thackery's strong point. The band lays down some strong grooves and he is at his most eloquent when he lets his guitar do the talking, as on the instrumental Landlocked when we get a reminder that like most white American bluesmen of his generation he probably started out trying to sound like the Ventures. If you're waiting impatiently for the next Ry Cooder album this will plug the gap.
