We first met young Jack in the verse novel Love That Dog, as  he not only learned to cope  with the death of his adored pet, he also discovered the magic of poetry.
In Hate That Cat, Sharon Creech's sequel to her Carnegie medal-winning book, Jack has now moved up a school year.
He's still taught, however,  by the poetry-loving Miss Stretchberry. And she is as determined as ever to get her students to share her passion  for verse.
While Jack already enjoys poetry he still has a lot to learn. Miss Stretchberry is, however, an expert and enthusiastic guide. She introduces her pupils to the likes of T.S. Eliot and Edgar Allan Poe and shows them how to both feel the mood and understand the structure of poetry.
In the course of the book, Jack not only develops his enthusiasm for poetry, he also makes the leap from cat hater to cat lover. Initially, the last thing he wants is the kitten given to him for Christmas. But, of course, the little bundle of fur eventually finds its way into his heart.
Even though this volume lacks the originality of Love That Dog, Creech is still a clever, observant writer who can turn a simple idea into something special. She  has a great gift for writing in a simple but inspiring and entertaining way.
Hate That Cat is a fun and easy read for anyone who doesn't want anything too demanding.
