Relatives of a taxi driver killed in a collision with a truck in Lok Ma Chau two weeks ago could miss out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from the public, a drivers' union warned after halting a collection for the family following a police warning that it was breaking the law.

To Sun-tong, organiser of the fund-raising for father of four Yu Yat-hing, 54, said: 'If everything has to go through the formal procedures it will take months.'

Mr To said his group, the Motor Transport Workers General Union, had verbally notified police and the social welfare and home affairs departments of its plans, but had been unable to immediately submit the required documents because offices were shut over the Lunar New Year holiday.

He said fund-raisers for victims of last year's Sichuan earthquake had been allowed to collect money before filing the required papers.

The union had said it expected to raise HK$200,000 to HK$300,000 for Yu's family. Now it says it may raise as little as HK$100,000. Union members have already contributed HK$300,000 for Yu's family.

Yu's five passengers were also killed in the crash.
