The daughter of former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian lost her temper on the streets of New York after being stalked by paparazzi for days.

Chen Hsing-yu, the only member of the immediate family who has not been charged with any criminal acts, was seen on a Taiwanese TV broadcast yesterday shouting at a group of reporters.

'Am I a wanted criminal? Have I done anything wrong that you have to corner me everywhere?' Ms Chen shouted on Monday when she was surrounded after taking a qualification examination for practising dentists.

Ms Chen left Taiwan on Saturday, and ruling Kuomintang lawmakers speculated that she had gone to New York to secretly help her father cover up his alleged crimes, including laundering illegal funds.

A few days before she arrived in the US, she saw her father, who has been held at the Taipei Detention Centre, pending his trial on charges of bribery, money-laundering, embezzlement, document forgery and other offences.

'I came to New York to take the dentist examination, and for sightseeing after the examination,' said Ms Chen, screaming.

Asked whether she would meet Huang Fang-yen, a family doctor to the former first family and a key witness in the case, in a fit of anger, she shouted: 'If you suspect that I am going to meet Huang Fang-yen, you should approach him rather than surrounding me.'
