When students learn English, they learn both the pronunciation and spelling of new words. The problem is whether they learn to pronounce correctly.
The most accurate way to learn the pronunciation of a new English word is through the use of phonetic symbols. Unfortunately, most Hong Kong students do not know the system and cannot read phonetic symbols.
I think this makes it hard for students to learn to say English words the way they should be pronounced.
In some cases, even our teachers do not know how to pronounce words accurately. For example, if you are not very careful, it is easy to mispronounce the words 'eligible' and 'illegible', so that they end up sounding the same.
I don't know what to do about this problem, and I would like to ask for some advice. I don't know of any other method than phonetic symbols for learning pronunciation. Do you have any suggestions?
