How can the marathon route be improved?
Your editorial ('We must have crowds to cheer on marathon', February 9) prompted me to think about the future of this successful annual event. And I think why not a 'car-less day' at the same time as the marathon? To wake non-participating residents up at 5am even for a good cause should be avoided.
So why not close all urban roads for eight hours or more on the Sunday, so that marathon runners, cheering crowds, wanderers, tourists, parades, rickshaws, bicycles and tricycles (for kids) can take up the roads for a change?
Businesses would only be slightly affected by this.
In fact, retailers would be happy to see the crowds and hear their cash registers ringing.
Critics might argue that this could be chaotic. But this need not be the case if we have world-class planning.
There needs to be co-operation between the different groups, good management and consideration must be shown for the emergency services and transport links to the airport.
