Intel, which is the largest supplier of chips to mainland electronics manufacturers, plans to bolster its domestic distribution strategy, while continuing to put seed money into local information-technology start-ups.

Ian Yang, the president of Intel China and a vice-president of the United States-based chipmaker's sales and marketing group, said: 'The only way to win in times of economic downturn is to innovate.'

With an eye to stimulating local market opportunities, Intel will boost marketing programmes for its new chips designed for desktops, laptops and servers.

For example, Mr Yang said the trend this year would be for thinner and lighter notebook personal computers.

The company has been aggressively promoting use of its Atom processor for the low-cost mini-notebook product category, commonly known as netbooks.

Intel Capital, the chipmaker's global investment organisation, recently provided an undisclosed amount to Zhejiang Enjoyor, a specialist developer and supplier of solutions for automated health care, security and traffic systems.
