FLAT-OWNERS in 80 blocks in Kwun Tong, Shamshuipo and Mongkok have been ordered to remove unsightly and dangerous cages and balconies.
The move marks the latest phase of a building safety campaign - Operation Rolling Stone - to get rid of illegal structures in private buildings.
Officers had been inspecting the buildings and issuing advisory letters to owners of flats with illegal work, said Robert Gartan, senior structural engineer in the Buildings Department.
Illegal structures include an iron gate in the corridor, ledges, roof-top huts, and balconies, which are not included in the original building plan.
The Government estimated three years ago there could be up to one million such structures.
Mr Gartan said 85 blocks had been cleaned up in the first phase of the operation, launched a year ago.
