Ten years can seem like an eternity in any relationship, particularly a professional one. And the pair of musicians who make up Primary Shapes admit their decade together has had its moments.

'We constantly examine and dissect our relationship,' says Yuen Cheuk-wa, who forms the band along with Tang Chi-wai. 'We have a lot of cohesion and collision as well.'

This year's Hong Kong Arts Festival has given the duo a chance to celebrate their 10-year milestone and - true to form - they have decided to do things differently.

A simple showcase of the avant-garde electronica that has won them fans here and abroad would not do, nor would a simple stage show.

Primary Shapes have turned to Douglas Hofstadter's book Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid for inspiration. On the surface, it's a tome about mathematics, graphic art and music. But Yuen says there's more to it.

'We were inspired by the book but we are not literally translating ideas from the book to the performance,' he says. 'It's about understanding yourself. The show is more about the relationships between people, events and the world, and obviously the relationship between the two of us.
