Burst water pipe In Wan Chai floods shops and roads
Shops, footpaths and roads were flooded and pedestrians had to wade through ankle-deep water in Canal Road West in Wan Chai after a 20-year-old underground water pipe burst at about 2am yesterday. A section of Canal Road West between Sharp Street West and Hennessy Road and a section of Wan Chai Road between Bowrington Road and Canal Road West were cordoned off for repairs on the damaged water pipe and road surface. The repair work on the pipe was completed last night, but the roads will not reopen until about 6am today. The Water Supplies Department said the supply of fresh water was not affected. The department is investigating the incident.
Mainland muggers hurt man
A man who was assaulted and robbed by four muggers on the mainland had to go to hospital when he returned to Hong Kong via the Lok Ma Chau border checkpoint at 12.30am. The 41-year-old was injured on the right wrist and hand, and was treated at North District Hospital.
Drunken husband attacks officers
Two policemen were injured when a drunken man attacked them with a plastic stool and glass bottle in Sheung Wan. Police were called to his flat in Bonham Strand West at about 1am when the man, 52, had a dispute with his wife, 48. When officers arrived, the man attacked them. Police arrested him after a brief scuffle. The officers were treated at Queen Mary Hospital.
