About 80 per cent of PCCW employees are expected to join a work-to-rule protest against the sacking of workers and introduction of unpaid leave by the telecommunications giant.

Pacific Century Cyberworks Staff Association chairman Terry Ip Ngok-fung urged employees to dress in black and to refuse to work overtime or perform extra duties today.

'There are about 13,000 PCCW employees in Hong Kong and I think about 80 per cent of the staff will join our action,' he said.

The union, an affiliate of the Confederation of Trade Unions, announced the industrial action plan on Saturday.

Mr Ip said it might take longer for customers to obtain services, as staff would not work overtime to speed up the handling process.

A PCCW spokeswoman said: 'We have good internal communication channels with our staff. There are regular meetings between the management and the joint staff consultative members. In the meantime, we are working through the implementation details of the special no paid leave with our staff.'
