You may have read that the auspicious, or wealth, sector this year lies in the southeast part of a home. You may also recall that it was in the east sector last year and the west the year before that, which raises the questions: why does the wealth sector move from year to year and what determines that shift?
The moving wealth sector is particular to those who follow the Flying Stars School of fung shui, which is popular in Hong Kong. The basis of the theory is that every year there is a different type of energy that governs your home and the world at large.
The energy here refers to the quality of the nine 'flying stars', and is considered by some to be a form of Chinese numerology.
To determine which energy is in control for the year, the first step is to add all four digits of the year together. For 2009, the calculations would be as follows: 2+0+0+9, which gives you 11. You then reduce this number to a number between 1 and 10 (11 = 1+1 which makes 2).
The final step is to subtract this from 11, (11-2 = 9), a number that is constant in these calculations. The governing number is nine, which denotes the star of celebration and happiness.
For the year 2010, using the same steps as above, the governing number will be eight. The governing number determines the position of certain stars in a home according to a grid, which will be the subject of next week's column.
