The Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders (HKUYL) held a 'refugee camp' last month to give students a first- hand experience of poverty.
Together with Crossroads International, the union organised the 'Life X-perience camp' for teenagers on February 13 and 14. The camp was the last phase of the union's Global Awareness Project.
The project aimed to raise the awareness of Form Four students about people who do not have access to basic human rights.
Phase One of the project was research into global issues such as fair trade, the food crisis and child labour.
Phase Two was a World Congress, in which students presented their solutions and role-played raising funds for charity.
The Life X-perience camp was Phase Three, and it involved some 70 students. They experienced life as refugees and people living in extreme poverty through various activities and role-playing games.
