Cutting short the holidays for school

Chris Huang

Towards the end of the Lunar New Year, many students chose to return to school early to prepare for the new semester, do extracurricular courses, or simply get online and chat with friends.

Zhou Zejia, a student at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, returned to school early to prepare for his driving test.

'I signed up for a driving course before the vacation and I want to get more time to practise my driving skills,' he said.

Pang Zhiyun, from the same university, returned to school in advance to prepare for upcoming open exams.

He said he would be taking the National Computer Rank Examination Level 2 and the National Securities practitioners qualifying exam, and needed to go to the school's library to prepare for the exams.

Most students returned to school early to study for exams, especially those who were taking open exams or applying for graduate schools.

But some came back to school early simply because they were bored at home.

Li Dongheng, also from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, arrived at her dorm a few days before school because she said she had nothing to do at home.

'I have nothing fun to do at home, so I came back earlier to clean my dorm and sort out the documents on my computer,' she said.

Xie Fuqing, also from the university, said: 'At home I have no access to the ... internet, so I came back earlier to surf the internet and chat with my friends on QQ or MSN.'
