The Swire Group's Pacific Adventurer is no stranger to disaster.

At 3am on June 22, 2006, the 23,700-tonne cargo ship collided with a PLA patrol vessel, killing up to 13 Chinese naval personnel.

None of the 28 crew aboard the cargo ship were killed or injured.

A television report from state broadcaster CCTV claimed after the incident that the Swire ship had fled the scene of the accident, which happened near the Zhuhai section of the Pearl River.

However, the company denied the report, and said the captain had steered the vessel away to ensure the crew were safe.

'According to international safety regulations, we have to check our own ship to make sure we are not damaged because we can't provide assistance if we are damaged,' a spokesman said at the time.
