Like many young people, popular internet writer Tang Siu-lam fell into a romantic relationship with a friend she found on the Net.
However, the unpleasant experience that unfolded alerted her to the risks of making friends on the internet.
Miss Tang, 25, who has shared her optimistic outlook on fighting cancer in her personal weblog, shared her own and her friend's stories with parents and secondary school students yesterday in a talk, organised by the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong, on the risks of meeting internet friends.
Her ill-fated romantic experience began with a message left on her blog.
'Over a year ago, one day he left me a message on my blog after reading it. This was how we became friends,' she said.
'We then started dating after talking to each other on the internet for two to three months.
'Like many others, I started this relationship because I had feelings for him after chatting online.'
