A brand of chicken essence drink, popular in Hong Kong as a health tonic and energy booster, has been recalled in the US because officials say they cannot be sure if the product has been prepared under approved inspection standards.

The United States chicken-drink recall includes packages containing six 2.3-fluid ounce bottles of Brand's Essence of Chicken Drink, Brand's Essence of Chicken Drink with Cordyceps Extract, Brand's Essence of Chicken Drink with Four Herbs, Brand's Essence of Chicken Drink with Lingzhi and Brand's Essence of Chicken Drink with Ginseng.

Some supermarkets and pharmacies in the city have already stopped selling the products.

The website of the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service did not say where the Brand's products were manufactured.

However, a Sunday Morning Post inspection of similar Brand's products for sale in supermarkets and pharmacies in Hong Kong revealed that those sold here were produced on the mainland.

The US agency deemed that the chicken drinks were ineligible for import and ordered a recall of about 1.29 tonnes of the products on March 12.

Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety said it would investigate.
