Many key looks this spring (and also for the upcoming autumn/winter season) point to a 1980s revival. While not all trends will filter down to the street, one that I have spotted is the tiered skirt, a classic 1980s prom style. On the catwalk Luella, Moschino, Christopher Kane and Philip Lim featured skirts embellished with multi-folded tiers. Some are worn high on the waist or above the knee while others are cut asymmetrically for a more dramatic look. Ariel's outfit (bottom right) immediately reminded me of a look I spotted at Luella. She picked a cream-coloured, cotton, tiered skirt and matched it with a T-shirt in a similar colour with a cool and colourful illustration that gives the outfit a rock vibe. She is also wearing a light grey cashmere cardigan, purple leggings and a pair of double strap Mary Jane heels that aren't too girly and balance the ensemble. Angel (left) is wearing a blue chiffon skirt with more subtle tiers and an extra layer of silk lining underneath. She matched this with a white silk blouse layered on top of a polka-dot tank, and finished the look with a boyfriend blazer to add a playful twist to her look. I also like her metallic flats with floral details, which are a must-have style this season. It's interesting to see how she has mixed different fabrics and textures, creating more dimension to her look. Tiered skirts are a very feminine trend (and can border on the American cheerleader look), so there is a risk of looking too girly. Work boyish items into the mix to balance the look. Even a pair of geeky glasses such as Ariel's can do the trick. For styles that are on-trend, go for mini-skirts that you can wear with thigh-high socks and patent leather oxfords or high-heeled trainers. For a more chic look, get a high-waisted style and finish it off with a wide belt at the waist. If your skirt has plenty of layers, make sure it's the right length and wear killer heels to show off your legs. I saw a cool black-and-white striped cotton tiered skirt in Roxy (1F, 1-3 Pak Sha Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2895 5028), a pink jersey tiered dress with ruffle front in Tommy Hilfiger (Shop B19, Basement, The Landmark, 15 Queens Road, Central, tel: 25258848) and a black Tulle strapless tiered dress at BCBG Max Azaria (LG1-57, Festival Walk, 80 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, tel: 2265 7600). Sergio Rossi's latest collaboration with sportswear brand Puma includes some cool trainers in purple and white satin (Shop 255, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, tel: 29180872).
