'Long Hair' loses final legal bid for a minimum wage

Legislator Leung Kwok-hung lost his last bid to push for a minimum wage using the courts after the chief justice ruled in the Court of Final Appeal that the legislator had no grounds to proceed. He was seeking leave to overturn a judgment of an appeal court ruling that the government was not legally obliged to use the Trade Boards Ordinance to tackle low wages. Chief Justice Andrew Li Kwok-nang upheld the lower court's position that the government had the discretion over whether to use the law to enact a minimum wage.

Oxfam urges ethics in rag trade

Oxfam is calling on local garment companies to show a commitment to corporate social responsibility by accepting ethical labour standards and giving consumers sufficient information on their labour policies. This follows its study that found 19 of 26 garment firms surveyed had not mentioned their efforts to ensure ethical standards in yearbooks or on websites.

HK food fair opens next month

The Chinese Manufacturers' Association will stage the Hong Kong Food Carnival at Kwai Chung sports ground from April 3-14. Using the theme 'healthy eating', 170 exhibitors will showcase locally branded food products. The event is expected to create 500 temporary and permanent jobs.
