Extra trips to the bar will be the order of the weekend for Sevens fans in the South Stand at the Hong Kong Stadium after a decision to ban beer jugs.

The ban is an attempt to prevent serious injury in the party stand from fans who, in past years, have thrown the hard plastic jugs at each other, streakers and security staff.

Two-litre jugs will still be available in other parts of the stadium.

To compensate for the ban, beer sponsor Guinness and major supplier Carlsberg have introduced a one-litre cup and carrier which allows two to be bought at the same time. Pimms and other alcoholic beverages will also be available in the new cups. One litre of Carlsberg or Guinness will cost HK$100, with packs of two available for HK$200. Beer will also be available in 500ml cups for HK$52.

Hong Kong Rugby Football Union community manager Robbie McRobbie said: 'There have been safety issues for spectators, players and officials, with jugs being thrown in the past. These 'big gulp' glasses just seemed to be the way to go.'

However, Rupert Bolingbroke, who will spend his weekend either in the South Stand dressed as a lifeguard or assisting operations at the post-event party at the Valley Big Top Tent, said there was bound to be complaints about the decision.
