Fever Ray
Fever Ray (Mute)
This side project of the Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson is a more low-key affair than her work with brother Olof.
The dark poundings of If I Had a Heart set a sombre mood - it's as if Dreijer has woken up some Sunday morning wondering where it all went wrong. But Dreijer never allows her audience to find a comfort zone.
So we go from the personal to the bizarre. 'I'm very good with plants/ when my friends are away they let me keep their soil moist', she sings gleefully on When I Grow Up before again baring her soul on Now's the Only Time I Know.
That she chooses to add almost every sound imaginable to the mix - from hand claps to assorted whistles and squeaks - simply adds to Fever Ray's mystique. It's unsettling listening, but somehow manages to creep under your skin.
