China Telecom Corp, the nation's biggest fixed-line operator, gained more than 10,000 registered users in its free-trial launch of 3G mobile services in Jiangsu province last week, the company said on its website yesterday.
China Telecom selected Jiangsu as the first province to launch services based on CDMA EVDO technology developed in the United States.
The company gave free USB modem devices to the 10,000 registered China Telecom users. The modem enables personal computer users to browse the internet through the 3G connection.
China Telecom acquired the new users in just four days. Other interested users will be asked to subscribe to the service.
Trial users will be automatically switched to the paid service once the trial ends.
China Telecom also introduced a special offer for 100,000 existing 2.5G mobile internet users. Monthly users paying 100 yuan or more can pay 450 yuan to upgrade to a 3G-compatible mobile data card. This allows users to connect to 3G, 2.5G and wireless broadband networks.
