Eason Chan
H3M (Cinepoly)
Chan is the leading light of Canto-pop, and his new album H3M - produced and written by his backing band including Tai Chi members Gary Tong and Joey Tang - confirms his position.
The unsettled young man belting out corny romantic lyrics is replaced here by a mature rebel who knows while there's little you can do about life, there's still much you can sing about in it.
The opening big band jazz number Allegro, Opus 3.3am by Tong is a blast, but more resounding are One Thing Per Day and Life Goes On, which are timely reminders of life's little pleasures, as are The Sun Also Rises and Remember When, with thoughtful lyrics penned by veteran wordsmith Lin Xi.
The album ends fittingly with Chan's own composition, Salon, an artistically fulfilling and personally illuminating ballad that celebrates life as art, and vice-versa.
